Riddle Grid
Tic-tac-toe where every square is locked behind a riddle.
2–4 players · 5 min
Riddle Grid is fast tic-tac-toe with a brain-teaser guarding every square. On your turn you pick an empty square, a riddle flips over, and you get a few seconds to type the answer. Nail it and the square is yours. Miss it (or freeze up) and the square goes into a steal window where everyone else races to type the answer first: an opponent who solves it claims the square for their side, and your teammate can bail you out instead. If nobody solves it, the riddle is discarded and the square stays open for later. Two players go head to head; three or four players split into two teams that alternate who answers. First side to line up three squares in a row wins. If the board jams up with no line, the side holding more squares takes it, and a dead tie goes to one final riddle race. A whole game runs about five minutes, so you can fit a best-of-three into a coffee break.
How to play
Get three squares in a row (four in a row on a 4x4 board) horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. If play ends with no line, the team holding more squares wins.
Who's who
- Active Solver
- The player whose turn it is. Picks an empty square, sees the riddle first, and gets the solo answer timer to claim it.
- Challenger
- Everyone else during the steal window. Types an answer to grab the square for their own team (or, if they are the active player's teammate, to rescue the turn).
How a game goes
Setup
Seats are ordered as players join. With 2 players it is X versus O. With 3 or 4 players, seats alternate into Team X and Team O (with 3 players, the two-player team's members alternate turns, the solo player answers every one of their…
PICK (10s)
The active solver taps or clicks any empty square. Square selection uses the same click handler on desktop and mobile. Other players see the board greyed out with 'Team X is choosing'.
REVEAL
The chosen square flips and the riddle text is shown to everyone at once, so challengers can start thinking. A 1.5-second countdown plays before typing opens.
Step 3
SOLO ANSWER (riddleTimer seconds, default 25): Only the active solver can type, and the field is live for the whole phase.
Step 4
STEAL WINDOW (stealTimer seconds, default 15): Opens if the solo answer failed, was given up, or timed out. All other players may type at once, using the same three submit paths (tap, mouse click, Enter key) and the same 1-second cooldown;…
BURN
If nobody solves it, the square stays empty, the riddle is discarded with its answer shown for 4 seconds, and play continues.
SCORE
The claimed square fills with the team color and mark, everyone sees a 3-second result card with the correct answer and who got it. The board is checked for a line.
And then
PASS: Turn passes to the next seat in the other team. Repeat from PICK. END CHECK: The match ends when a team makes a line, when no empty squares remain, or after maxRounds turns (default 12), whichever comes first.
Tips
- Secret information: Riddles are hidden until their square is chosen, and the undealt deck is never shown.
